Born to British parents in the town of Stayner, Ontario in 1876, Edward Thomas Bishop, known as "E.T.", graduated with an Arts degree from the University of Toronto in 1899. He studied law at Osgoode Hall in Toronto, and was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 1902. He moved to Edmonton the same year. The following year, he married Thyrza Wooster of St. Thomas, Ontario. E.T. Bishop's law career in Alberta was long and distinguished. In 1903 he opened his first office in Edmonton on the southeast corner of 101 Street and Jasper Avenue. | Beginning in the early 1920s, E.T. Bishop specialized in corporate law which he continued with for the rest of his career. He was named a member of the Law Society of the Northwest Territories in 1903 and a member of the Law Society of the newly formed province of Alberta in 1905. In 1925, his contribution to the profession was recognized with his appointment as King's Counsel. In 1938, he was joined by his son, and they practised together until E.T. Bishop's death in 1947. His commitment to the legal profession and the high standards of excellence he set are honoured today at Bishop & McKenzie. | |
