Historical Milestones
1980's
1982 Bishop & McKenzie relocated to the 25th and 24th floors of the new Canada Trust Tower, with magnificent views, and a stylish interior design. As one of the first law firms to adopt computer stations for all staff at this early date, we were unique in our forward thinking approach to the delivery of legal services. There were nearly 30 lawyers associated with the firm by this time, and over 40 support staff, some of whom had begun work with Ted Bishop and Ken McKenzie in the 1950's.
1986 Kenneth McKenzie retired after 34 years with Bishop & McKenzie and nearly 50 years in the practice of law. He was eagerly sought out by Canadian Executive Services Overseas to consult to developing countries and spent several interesting years assisting in establishing the democratic process and drafting legislation in newly formed countries abroad. His son, Gordon McKenzie had joined Bishop & McKenzie as an articling student in 1976, being admitted to the Bar in 1977.
The partnership welcomed its first two women partners in this year.
Partner Tom Jackson, the first ever articling student with the firm in 1952, was elected a Bencher of the Law Society of Alberta, served two terms, and was selected by the other Benchers to serve as President of the Law Society.
1988 Ted Bishop was honoured by the Law Society of Alberta for 50 years of service as a practicing lawyer.
1988 Ted Bishop retired from the practice of law. He had been joined in the practice by his son Norman Bishop who graduated from law school in 1980. After completing his articles, Norman Bishop was admitted to the Bar in 1981.
1988 In July 1988, we opened our first Calgary office on 12th Avenue at 6th Street S.W. Bishop & McKenzie had always served clients across Alberta, but until 1988, we had only one office, located in Edmonton. Within 3 years, two Edmonton partners had relocated to Calgary and other lawyers had joined the Calgary office, for a total of 6 lawyers and one student.
