We believe that it is not enough to simply practice law. Our role must be greater. Bishop & McKenzie lawyers are dedicated to serving and enhancing our communities.

At Bishop & McKenzie, we have long recognized that we need to be involved in our communities. We believe that when we are active in the community, we are able to connect with our clients, our colleagues and the people in our neighbourhoods. We believe this makes us better citizens and better lawyers. Above all, we believe the members of our firm have an obligation to contribute to the communities in which we live and work.

As a firm, we have been involved in and remain committed to a wide variety of community oriented activities. For example, we continue to support the efforts of the United Way to raise funds for many worthwhile causes. As well, we have been a proud sponsor and supporter of the Bright Nights program. This program runs every Christmas season and is one of the largest seasonal outdoor light displays in Canada. Funds raised from this initiative help to provide hot lunches to the children in our elementary schools.

Bishop & McKenzie is also a strong supporter of the Junior Achievement (JA) program. The goal of this program is to provide Alberta students with the opportunity to learn the basics about business and to acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to be self-reliant and contributing members of society. Our lawyers and staff have volunteered as fundraisers and board members for JA and as well have given of their time to help teach the various courses offered by this program.

We have also been a proud participant in the Corporate Challenge. This is an event which takes place every year and which involves businesses and organizations of all sizes and from all walks, participating in a variety of sporting events such as slow pitch, soccer and volleyball. In addition to enjoying the good natured, friendly competition offered by this event the Corporate Challenge gives us a unique opportunity to interact with many of the other businesses in our community in a relaxed and more informal setting.

Throughout the year, Bishop & McKenzie also has a series of regularly scheduled events where our lawyers and staff help to raise funds for a wide variety of worthwhile causes. For example, in the past we have made donations to help support the Youth Emergency Shelter, the YMCA and YWCA and the SPCA.

Our lawyers and staff also give of their own time both personally and professionally. For example, our lawyers are active in the Law Society and the Bar Associations. As well, a number of the lawyers in our firm have taught at the University of Alberta and University of Calgary Faculties of Law. Others lecture in Bar Admission courses, lead continuing legal education seminars and present papers to the profession and to the public.

Many members of our firm are also active in a wide variety of personal pursuits ranging from the field of public broadcasting to various church and charitable activities. As well, many of our lawyers regularly participate in civic and community affairs, give of their time to the arts and theatre communities and can often be found lending a hand to a variety of sporting organizations.

We encourage you to read the individual profiles of our lawyers to learn more about the wide variety of ways Bishop & McKenzie and it's members are involved in the community.
