Ben was born and raised Lethbridge, Alberta, received his B.A. from Yale in 1974, and his M.A. in 1975 and his Ph.D. in philosophy in 1982 from the University of Toronto. He received his LL.B. in 1983 from the University of Alberta. He is currently the legal counsel to The Canadian Professional Boxing Federation and the City of Edmonton Boxing and Wrestling Commission. He serves as an instructor for an Edmonton Chamber of Commerce Small Business Course.
In the community, Ben is a former Chairman of the City of Edmonton Boxing and Wrestling Commission. Ben enjoys canoeing, backpacking, philosophy and mathematics. He and his wife Anna have three teenaged daughters.
